Chapter 7 - Diana

It was the first day in the two months that she'd been Khazzik's prisoner that their camp wasn't moving at all, and ShiShi was intent on using it to train Diana as much as possible.

So far their 'training' had consisted of vague snippets of information imparted to her by ShiShi at night, when they were both exhausted from long travel, or during their ride together through the steppes.

Diana had to admit, she was excited to finally have the chance to learn more about her abilities, and what it would mean for her future. She'd been completely thrown off when Khazzik started treating her differently when he'd found out about her psychic ability.

She should have been glad when he first refused to use her body to serve his carnal pleasures. She should have been glad when he started coming to her less and less frequently.

But she wasn't. Instead, she was more confused than she'd ever been before.

That morning, after Khazzik was long gone with his generals, Diana found ShiShi in her tent. She was already situated by the fire at the center of the yurt, her eyes closed, swaying back and forth in a trance. The tent was much warmer because of the fire—not even Khazzik's tent was large enough to safely make a fire—and Diana felt drawn to the warmth, and to ShiShi.

She came to join the shaman by the fire, slowly lowering herself onto one of the green cushions situated around the fire. She sat cross-legged like ShiShi, and then held her hands out to warm them by the flames. Although deep winter had passed, it still seemed a long way from spring, but what did she know of this strange, rocky place? It didn't seem to encourage the growth of any living things. It could be snowy and cold here all months of the year, for all she knew.

She missed the feeling of fresh grass under her bare feet, and of running her finger through stalks of wheat. She missed the scent of fresh bread when she snuck up on Nathan in the bakery, or when her mother took some straight from the oven.

Closing her eyes, she could picture her mother, father, and brothers at the kitchen table, enjoying a home-cooked meal together. Diana hadn't had a proper meal in so long, only the rations Khazzik supplied her with, and the occasional meat from whenever there was a successful hunt. She could almost taste the broth simmering on the stove, and smell the sweet aroma of fresh apple pie.

But even as her stomach growled with hunger, Diana felt a sense of peace wash over her. Warmth cascaded all around, and in a moment of pure magic, Diana felt herself transported into another world. She could see her parents clearly now, her mother bustling around, laughing and smiling as she prepared a feast for her family. And there was her father, his eyes crinkling in the corners with laughter as he teased one of Diana's brothers about something silly that one of them had done.
